How to find your face shape and what to do with it

Knowing your individual face shape helps you when choosing hair styles, cuts and makeup. Determining your face shape allows you to look the best you can. After all, you wouldn't want to go the opposite way would you! There are 7 basic face shapes, heart, oval, square, round, long, pear, diamond. However you can also have a mix of two, e.g, 'Roval' a mix of a round and oval face. This is very common.

How to find your face shape
Take all your hair off of your face and cleanse the skin to make sure there is no makeup on the face. Look at your face front on in a mirror, it may help if you imagine a shape drawn around your face. Once you have established which face shape you have you can work with it to give the best results. The oval face shape is considered to be the perfect face shape to have, therefore other face shapes are highlights or shaded to create this effect. Use a darker shade of foundation than you normally use to shade and either a lighter foundation or a white foundation for highlighting.

The heart face
*usually wider at the forehead or temples
*tapers to a long jawline
*cheeks usually prominent
Makeup aim : reduce width across forehead with shading and emphasise jawline with highlighting.

The oval face
*chin tapers slenderly from a slightly wider forehead
*looks well balanced
Makeup aim: accentuate the natural shape with highlighting.

The square face
*jaw appears angular
*broad forehead
Makeup aim: to round off the edges and soften the harsh corners with shading.

The round face
*face is usually short and broad
*round, full cheeks
Makeup aim: to slim the jawline and the temples and to give length with shading.

The long face
*face appears long and narrow
Makeup aim: shorten the length with shading and create width.

The pear face
*narrow forehead
*face widens out towards the jaw line
Makeup aim: to slim down the jawline with shading and create width.

The diamond face
*forehead appears narrow
*cheek bones appear wider
*tapered chin that can appear pointed
Makeup aim: minimise the cheeks by shading and creating width to the forehead and chin with highlighting.
